The Original Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

  1. I lost my 5 pound 12 year old min pin in a vicious dog attack yesterday. I’m grieving more then I thought I ever would. I find reading the Rainbow Bridge helpful along with the other poems. I must have read these 20 times today. I can only hope Cosy is there waiting for me. Thank You

    1. Hi Romy. I’m so sorry to hear about your loss, especially in such tragic circumstances. I’m glad that you find some comfort from the poems. I believe Cosy is safe and well on the meadow by Rainbow Bridge waiting for. Thank you for letting me know x

  2. I lost my beautiful kitty Loki yesterday, Easter Sunday. He was playful, all day. Chasing around the table after Izzy, our pom/chi mix. He was laying outside with his buddy Champ, our pitbull. Just enjoying the beautiful weather and sun. Last night, he was found laying on the ground, like he’d simply just fallen asleep. My heart is broken, I miss him so much already. I’ve seldom woken up, to him not curled up next to me. I love you Loki, and ill see you one day, at Rainbow bridge.

    1. So sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like she made a peaceful transition over to Rainbow Bridge which is I guess what we all hope for when it’s their time to go. Thank you for sharing with us. All the very best to you and your family at this difficult time x

  3. I lost my Shilo 12 yrs ago last aug 1st 2016. she was so wonderful loving and always care. I still grieve and real miss Shilo so much. Lucy and I really miss shilo. She went to Rainbow Bridge and be awaiting for us to meet again one day. I loved Shilo forever

  4. We had to put our Lacy Lu down in the fall, we have had many pets, and their death is never easy. They are, after all our family. Lacy, 15, was the first time I had ever held my friend while they put her to sleep. It was, most definitely the hardest thing I had ever done. One of my friends sent me the Rainbow Bridge, and as much as it made me cry, I was also relieved to know we will once again be joined with our furry family loved ones.

  5. Beautiful poem, I had to euthanize my 14 yr old Beagle almost 4 yrs ago, he broke my heart, but I do believe when I pass away I will be reunited with all my pets

    1. Hi. Thank you for your comment and sorry for your loss. We strongly believe that we
are reunited too and they are happy whilst they play in a timeless meadow x

  6. I lost my beloved dog Barclay 9/19/17. The most sensitive, loving, gentle, quirky, playful, and funny dog. He wasn’t a big guy — 20 lb Bichon Frise. But he’d throw his head back and howl like a wolf. He was intelligent — he knew tricks and I swear he had thumbs, the way he could get into and go through purses and unzip backpacks to remove sticks of chewing gum. But he was also a free spirit. He’d dig on the bed and made a huge to do every night rolling onto his back, all 4 paws splain in the air, barking. He’d turn over and bark at his bowls when he felt he needed to be fed. The best naps were with him, and I explored the many cities I’ve lived in on long walks with him. So much more, so many good times and wonderful memories.

Anyway, your poems were sweet Ann’s helped comfort me through this difficult time. I especially like the imagery of the single tear poem. If he could’ve talked, I wonder weekday he would’ve said in his final days.

  7. Just lost my baby girl of 19 years today. (Cat). I will miss her so much, the house is so empty without her here with me. I love you missy girl, I know you are no longer in pain.Until we meet again my beautiful girl..

  10. My Bruno had a short time on this earth. He got a raw deal. He was born 8/14/18 left me 6/2/19. His original owners didn’t do the right thing. The first 3 months he lived in a cage and was ignored. His health care wasn’t addressed causing him to have 5 parasites. This condition resulted in a psychological disorder, that couldn’t be repaired. He gave me so much joy and live . I miss him dearly

  11. Buddy was way too young to leave us. He was only 6 years old. He is our beloved Maine Coon mix whither the most adorable and endearing personality. He was the perfect Baby Boy and Best Friend. He is our Soul Mate. We’ll see you later Buddy.
